The Institute of Mathemathics building in Piazza di Porta San Donato is the most significant work by Giovanni Michelucci in Bologna: still the Mathemathics Department's base today, attended by a much greater number of students than what was predicted at the time of construction (1955-1965), it still carries out well its function, hosting teaching staff, personnel, students and scholars in its dedicated spaces for education, research and administration, all of which are connected by articulate paths.
The building fits harmoniously in the square at Porta San Donato and it has become an easily recognizable reference point in the city; it acts as a connection between the nearby 19th century's buildings where the academic activities take place, and more recent residential edifices; with its characteristic and elegant arcade it offers connecting spaces between inside and outside, which are not just aimed to the Department regulars' fruition, but to all the city dwellers.
